So I sent in an entry for a competition where you get a sonnet which has ever alternate line missing and you have to complete it with your own words.
This was the original sonnet I received:
In Spring
See how the trees and the osiers lithe
Are green bedecked and the woods are blithe,
The meadows have donned their cape of flowers,
The air is soft with the sweet May showers,
And the birds make melody:
But the spring of the soul, the spring of the soul,Cometh no more for you or for me.
The lazy hum of the busy bees
Murmureth through the almond trees;
The jonquil flaunteth a gay, blonde head,
The primrose peeps from a mossy bed,
And the violets scent the lane.
But the flowers of the soul, the flowers of the soul,
For you and for me bloom never again.
-Ernest Christopher Dowson
*The lines in bold are the ones I received as a part of the incomplete sonnet.
Below is my version of the sonnet:
Autumn Blossoms
See how the trees and the osiers lithe
Subtly mirroring the grace of roaring waves
The meadows have donned their cape of flowers,
As Gaea smiles from behind her veil
And the birds make melody:
But the ripples of love,
Cometh no more for you or for me.
The silent whispers of Aphrodite
Murmureth through the almond trees;
Azalea lies withering in wait
The primrose peeps from a mossy bed,
And hibiscus mends the broken heart
But the flowers of the soul, the flowers of the soul
Fade in wait of the gentle sun.
