“One year ago around the same time I was learning French using an app.

I didn’t know at the time I would meet this amazing girl that would turn into my girlfriend and we would spend some amazing eight months together, even though it was long distance, we were in love, everything started with a line I said, “Let’s meet for a coffee in Paris this august”.

It grew and grew until we were together, we shared and shared until we knew everything about each other, or at least we thought that. We didn’t meet that August, it was more like September. I was waiting in front of the Eiffel Tower and from nowhere this voice comes and brings me back to reality.

“Hey” she said, and as I looked behind, the sun hitting my face, I squinted my eyes to see her better, there she was, smaller in real life that I thought, but cute nevertheless. It took me some hours to actually come to the realization and to the idea that she was there, she was real! But this wouldn’t last! We would break up later on.

But while I was in France that time, I was getting out of Musee D’Orsay or something like that and I was looking for a map of the city, I went from place to place and they didn’t really have what I was looking for, until I stumble upon this little shop, I get inside and ask the lady in french if she has a guide of the city. She points to the table on the left, I take a look, but it was too expensive. I thank her and got going until she asks me from where I am, my accent was funny. Turning around I tell her I’m from Portugal and immediately she gets this big smile on her face. “Wait” she said, I have something for you. And from the counter she takes this huge guide book in Portuguese, extending her arms she gives it to me. “Here, there you go” she said with a smile on her face, “I hope it will help you”. I’ve received free stuff in the past too, but this felt special, I never thought a language could bring people together.

I put the book into my bag and then I leaned forward with my arms opened hugging her. There was this surprise on her face, she wasn’t expecting it. I still think about her from time to time, maybe someday I’ll return. I’m sure she won’t be there anymore, but I’m grateful for her.”
